PEERS

PEERS is the pre-PhD programme of the Institute for the Performing Arts and Film (IPF) at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). It supports emerging artistic researchers who are interested in pursuing a doctorate in the arts, foremost yet not exclusively in the performing arts and film. For a period of one and a half/two years, starting in September, participants attend collective research gatherings and enjoy one-on-one mentoring. Immersed in a dynamic research environment, they develop their research proposal within the framework of the IPF’s 3rd Cycle Research Programme. To this end, PEERS fellows are able to work with local and global partner institutions, learn to use and benefit from ZHdK’s infrastructure and receive tailored assistance in applying for artistic PhD programmes.

Programme activities and offerings:

  • Mentoring: PEERS participants are guided by two mentors, chosen from ZHdK’s pool of mentors and beyond.
  • Training: Four intensive multi-day workshops on artistic research methods, application strategies for PhD programmes, and presentation skills are offered, as well as a one-week summer residency. Travel expenses to Zurich and accommodation costs are covered.
  • Junior Research Group (JRG): Together with PhD candidates, PEERS fellows are part of the JRG, which gathers twice a semester in a hybrid set-up.
  • International exchange: The PEERS programme collaborates with 3rd Cycle predoctoral programs at Amsterdam University of the Arts and UdK Berlin, as well as with PhD programmes at partner institutions (e.g. Kunstuniversität Graz, University of the Arts Stockholm). Exchange is fostered by joint events throughout the year.
  • Individual development: PEERS fellows are each awarded a personal production budget to cover research trips, books, conference or festival participation, as well as other activities and measures serving to develop their research.
